AMELIE
FILM REVIEW

Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, better known as Amelie, is a French film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz. The movie sets in Montmartre, Paris, and it tells the story of Amelie Poulain, a shy waitress who, after a few failed relationships, finds pleasure in simple things and letting her imagination roam free.

The story begins when Amelie finds in her apartment a metal box full of`childhood memorabilia that belonged to a kid who lived there decades ago, and decides to track down the now adult owner and return it back to him. After she does, seeing the happiness that she brought to this man, she decides to do good in the life of others.

Amelie starts acting like a guardian angel in many people's lives, but at the same time she is being observed by her neighbour, Mr. Dufayel, who through their conversations forces her to examine herself and notice the attraction she has for a man who collects discarded photographs at a photo booth named Nino. After she bumps into him again, and luckily recovers the album he dropped, she starts playing a cat and mouse game with him all around Paris, until she finally returns the treasured album. However, after she finally arranges a meeting face to face with him, she is too shy to approach and lets the oportunity pass. It takes the advice of Mr. Dufayel for her to gain some courage and finally meet wit him, what gives the start of their relationship.

This film, even though is not the common Hollywood movie we're used to watch, is definitely one everyone should see. The sentimentalism printed in some key scenes, the great acting job and the director's choice about the color, which gives it a childish and innocent tone, transmits a powerful message and introduces the viewer into the story in a very interesting and personal way.
